Post Road Pumpkin Ale – Brooklyn Brewery

Okay, if you don’t know Brooklyn Brewery, don’t feel bad.  They have one regular beer available at the LCBO, the awesome Brooklyn Lager.  This year, in the fall release they brought in their Post Road Pumpkin Ale, and demonstrated that Brooklyn is no one trick pony.  Of course, if you follow the craft beer scene in the states, you already knew this.  Garrett Oliver, brewer at Brooklyn, not only makes stellar beers, but penned The Brewmaster’s Table, one of the most highly regarded books dealing with beer, beer culture and food & beer.  Feel free to buy it via Amazon using the links on the right (you get a book, I get money, we all win!).  So let’s drink some Pumpkin Ale:

From a 355ml brown pop-top with a best before date on the neck, the beer pours an orangey brown, clear with good carbonation and a foam head that settles into a thick film.  Aroma is a great mix of earthy hops and pumpkin with hints of pie spices.  The hops play so well with the sturdy pumpkin aroma.  Taste is a big fresh pumpkin hit immediately followed by a leafy hop and spices, allspice ginger and cloves.  A touch of hops and a good bit of pumpkin linger in the finish.  There is a sweetness throughout, and if you look for it, a nice grainy malt.  I always find pumpkin beers have a bit more body, and Post Road is no exception, creamy and smooth, but the carbonation keeps it in check.  This is a great fall beer, would go amazing with all your usual thanksgiving type foods, but also I think it would be stellar with a nice firm white fish.  I could really see cooking some halibut en papillote with this as the liquid and then drink a glass while I eat it.  Anyways, this is getting off track.  Love the beer, despite my general preference away from pumpkin beers.  I’m finding a few this year that I really dig.  There’s still a lot of this available at the LCBO, and it’s pretty good value at $2.60/bottle (LCBO #90373), go pick up a few bottles and enjoy!

Thanks Brooklyn Brewery!
