Stuff You Need To Know Today — August 2nd 2012

It’s been a while since I did one of these, but as is always the case when I do, I’ve got a back-log of stuff to tell you all about. Special days, festivals, contests; this post has got it all.

#IPAday

Today is IPA day, which I think is actually supposed to be spelled with the hashtag and jammed together.  I’m not fully sure why, and the website (ipaday.org) doesn’t mention it, but August 2nd was picked and here we are. Get yourself out to a good beer bar, or crack open a beer at home, and get some quality craft IPA in you.  Then Tweet about it and hashtag it #IPAday.  Or come up with your own way to commemorate. Jordan St John and I just had a witty conversation via twitter using hop varietal puns.  Laughs ensued.

Oom-pah-pah

Drindle GirlI know right, it’s only the start of August.  But that means (among other things) Oktoberfest is just around the corner!  And while Kaydub hosts the big big party, the beer selection is not exactly craft, or even German, -heavy.  So why not head nearly as far east as you can get in Ontario, and still be in Ontario, and hit up Beau’s Oktoberfest?  German-style craft beer, awesome people, plus it’s a huge charity event.  Earlybird tickets are on sale now next week, so if you want some, get on it now! Full details here: http://www.beaus.ca/oktoberfest

And the winner is…..

Sam Adams Boston Lager!

What did they win?!

The LCBO Brewmaster’s Cup, of course! Indeed, the LCBO selected 16 beers from 16 different countries, and pitted them in a no-holds-barred contest, a voted on by you, the consumer.  Funny enough, the two finalists were Canada and the USA, represented by Moosehead Lager (Canada) and Boston Lager (USA).  This is funny, as Moosehead and Sam Adams have a strategic partnership, and Sam Adams products are sold in Ontario by Premium Beer, Moosehead’s importing arm.  So it was a win for Premium no matter what.  But you had to know Moosehead wanted to win it.  Still, between the two, Sam Adams Boston Lager is my preference, so it’s a happy day for me too!

Ask not what this blog can do for you

Okay, I’ve been sort of on-and-off planning a pretty major overhaul of this old blog for a few months.  I’ve got some great ideas, based partially on stuff I’ve seen in my metrics, and partially on stuff I just think is an awesome idea.  But as you’ve made it this far, and are still reading, I would like to know what you think.  What is working here?  What could be better?  What should be gone?  What is missing?  Feel free to comment or use my contact form to get in touch with me.  Thanks in advance!

My Apologies

I need to offer an apology to my friends at BBbarfly, makers of the butterfly-knife style bottle opener.  I told them I was totally going to post a press release of theirs leading up to Toronto Festival of Beer, and I didn’t.  Cos I’m a scatter-brained doofus.  Anyways, they had quite a successful fest, from what I hear, and certainly I heard enough click-clicking of their distinctive openers to know that they weren’t sitting on their hands.  If you didn’t get an opener at the fest, you can buy them at the Beer Store, or from their website, http://bbbarfly.com/

Are you experienced?

This year, the Premium Beer Experience is back at the Berkeley Church.  Featuring awesome beers from around Toronto, it’s a great chance to drink some amazing new beers.  Even better, there’s a Living Social deal for it right now. Buy your tickets for less here.

Pictorial Information

I’m not exactly sure when infographics became such a commodity, but let me tell you, there are a lot out there.  I always enjoy seeing ones about beer, though, so I was happy when this one from Frugal Dad arrived in my inbox.
