Grainy rainy day by the big water, so I thought I’d crack into this NEIPA I grabbed at the LC yesterday. Starboard from @lb_brewing is a hazy deep amber with a lot of protein chunk to it. Juicy nose, with strawberries and pineapple as well as some citrusy goodness. Interesting on the tongue; I wanted to say it’s more bitter than I’d expect, except of course, that some of the original NEIPAs were actually fairly bitter as well, not just aromatic. A bit tannic and dry, then an orchard of stone fruits and apples, with just a bit of tropicals cruising in on the finish. It’s maybe a bit sweet on the finish too, maybe some crystal malts in there? Oh. Oh dear. I was checking the packaging to see if it gave any insight, and it did, as the packaged date code is 19 10 18, which I assume means it was canned on October the 19th of last year. This is like 5 months old. I’m guessing some of the nice juicy aromatics are breaking down. It’s not bad, but definitely makes me wish I’d gotten some in the fall. Perhaps another batch is in the works? Sadly these beers are best fresh fresh, and this one is not. Good lesson kids: check your date codes when buying beer!
