Dark Star is an English brewery, and according to their label, they’ve won some nice awards. I first had this beer at the LCBO fall release tasting, and really enjoyed it. I picked up a bottle to review properly, and it’s been sitting waiting for me since. I was really taken by the label, which has this chunky design to it. And the beer was pretty good too. Let’s see if I still like it.
From a 500ml bottle with a great label and no freshness date I could find, the beer is an opaque black with a little bit of tan head. head drops to a film that hangs around for the duration of the pint. Aroma is really dark coffee, a little smoky and charred. Hints of sweet malts and maybe rum, but the coffee is the main element. Taste is again quite a bit of coffee, though now the sweet/rum flavours are brown sugar like. Heaps of dry coffee bitterness on the finish. Mouthfeel is very light with a nice carbonation and fairly clean dry finish. As a stout I could probably drink it all night, though the coffee taste might slow me down a bit. Great beer, shame it’s probably all gone from the LCBO now.
