January 9th Resolutions

Well, here we go.  Last year, I discussed why I dislike the notion of New Year’s resolutions, and I’ve not changed my stripes since then.  I succeeded (slightly) in my efforts last year, and felt I would do well to set some goals again this year.  And here they are:

Semi-pro

I frequently joke about having a profession that I don’t get paid for.  Let’s change that.  Goal numero uno is to publish 5 articles that I get paid for.  Either print or digital, I’m not picky.  Must be beer-related.

I’m really digging the Google Hangout podcasts, so I think this goal will be a big one, but manageable: Interview people on all 7 continents.  I know, right?  Wouldn’t that be crazy?  Well, I’m feeling a little crazy.

One Part Frank Gehry, One Part Mark Zuckerberg

I’ve said it for well over a year, I’ve even talked to a few people about helping out, but nothing yet.  And my golly: this blog might have some decent information in it, but it needs a facelift to help out.  Actually, a facelift is not what it needs, as the changes are not cosmetic.  I want to change the way information is presented, to make it easier and more enticing for people arriving by searches to stay and read more.  Right now, the vision is to have a few different sections: reviews, drinking/beer guides, food/cooking, media (radio, podcasts, etc) and maybe more.  As my writing and interests have grown organically, the way I present information hasn’t, and that needs to change.  And so it shall.

Okay, I totally missed on my writing goal last year.  I was aiming to be at 500 posts, and was only at 440.  So I’ve considered how many posts per week I can reasonably manage, and I think I can confidently set a goal of hitting 650 posts this year, meaning I need to write 210 new posts.  Considering my friends Joel and Dana over at http://www.wellpreserved.ca have posted every day for the past three years or something, that doesn’t seem too difficult.

Focused Like a Laser Beam Strapped to a Shark’s Head

Fun fact: My most read consecutive seven days was during Cider Week last year.  I know, crazy.  Beer blog, Cider Week, what’s up?  Actually, I’m now getting numbers close to what I got that week, but in the one-year graph, it’s clearly a spike.  Amsterdam Week also produced a notable jump in views.  So this year, I’m going to do a quarterly theme week.  Watch out for Whiskey Week at the end of January, Cider Week in May, A brewery feature towards the end of the summer, and a yet-to-be-declared week in the winter.
