Golden Rule – Short’s Brewing Co.

Another bottle my dear Mum brought me from Michigan (thanks again, Mum!), so yeah, you won’t find this at the LCBO, sorry.  Short’s is a very well-respected brewery in Michigan.  I thought Golden Rule was a good choice today, as it’s pride weekend in Toronto.  While I won’t pin all the blame on one person, there certainly has been a disturbing amount of homophobia in the mainstream this year in Toronto.  As upsetting as it it, it is also a good reminder of just how far we have come as a community, and how fragile that progress is.  And regardless of sexuality or creed, the Golden Rule is a good starting point.  Let’s do unto others as we would have them do unto us.  Aside from my message of tolerance, the beer is labelled as being an organic Golden Ale with earthy hoppiness.  Sounds lovely!

From a 120z bottle with a fun label depicting either Jesus or an Angel raising a pint and toasting with the Golden Rule.  The beer pours a cloudy golden yellow with a hint of orange in the centre.  1/2″ of bubbly head drops to a dense film and leaves a touch of lace.  Aroma is a bit of sweet grains, with a leafy, nearly tropical hop aroma.  Hints of pineapple.  Taste is wonderfully hoppy.  Any malt sweetness is filling in the back-ground like a great bassist.  Hops are dry and a little sharp, not unlike Stephen Fry’s sense of humour.  In this case, he would be joking about the scent of a rainforest in bloom.  Leafy, a little sticky, hints of nice tropical notes.  And while Stephen is telling the joke, he’s sipping a cup of Orange Pekoe from Mark’s and Spencer.  Nicely dry bitter finish.  Body is maybe a tad thin (here we depart from the  Stephen Fry analogy), but the depth of flavour and nice carbonation helps fill this in. A really great beer, just wonderful.

About the Brewery

Shorts Brewing Co.In April of 2004 we opened the doors to Short’s Brewing Company in the quaint Village of Bellaire.  Beer was the mission, and liberation was the movement.  With a lot of elbow grease, blind ambition and a little luck, the quest to create a community pub in Northwest Lower Michigan began to take shape.  The philosophy was to bring an appreciation of craft beer to the north with product education and creativity.  The process of appreciation through education we call beer liberation.

Today Short’s Brewing Company continues the effort to educate and liberate consumers.  We take pride in our hands on, mom and pop approach and the energy we put into the quality of our beer, food, staff, customers and facilities. We believe in the power of the smallness.   We intend on remaining a smaller, state wide beer distributor and focusing our energies close to home (the SBC Michigan stimulus package).  Our goal is to get to a comfortable production volume, enjoy what we do and love life in Northern Michigan.
