Ah, Mike Lackey and his Project X beers. They’ve run the gamut from stupendous to Polish Sandwich Lager. So when Mike hooked me up with a pair of PX bottles in lieu of the actual event last month, which I couldn’t attend, I was well excited. I know he told me the deal with this beer (aside from it’s name), but I’ve totally forgotten. Sorry Mike, thanks though!
From a Project X bomber with a neck label identifying it, this beer pours an opaque black with shades of red at the edges. A big foamy tan head drops to a fuzzy film but lingers and laces like mad. Aroma is currants and molasses and dark malts with some smoke. Hints of rum and port. Taste is a big porter, bitter and charred, with the currants adding a nice tart edge. Burnt sugar balanced with dark fruits. Finish is dry and bitter with a hint of the tart currant. The beer has a nice medium body, with a fairly pronounced carbonation. I could drink lots of this, though I’m sure it’s maybe a little too big for the average person to think of it as sessionable. A really nice beer.
A really great beer, though I’m sad I didn’t get to try it on cask, whenever it was on. Much more porter than fruit; my kind of balance! Thanks again Mike.
