La Belle Crawl – Super Marche Rahman

So, after a mighty big sandwich, the only thing left to do was make a pick-up of beers that we would be difficult (at best) to get back in Ontario.  The weird thing for most Ontarians, is not just that you can buy beer at the local corner store, but that you can buy very good beer there.  Both Quebecois beers you’ve likely never heard of, as well as Europeans that simply are not in Ontario.  You can also pick up a pack of smokes, a stick of jerky and a slushy.  Don’t forget, you’re at a corner store.  One of the biggest selections can be found just west of Dieu du Ciel!, at a little place called Super Marche Rahman.  You’ll be able to identify it, because it looks like a corner store, but the front window is blocked by a variety of high-end beer posters.

On entering, you’ll find a large fridge full of both crap (the usual Molson/Labbatt suspects) but also Unibroue, Dieu du Ciel!, Trappist ales, and some other very cool bottles.  Then there’s the shelves.  Which are full of sexy bottles that are begging to be bought.  Cases are stacked anywhere there is space.  And throughout this maze of amazing brews, there’s also instant mashed potatoes, sweets, cleaning products, the like.

I spent about 30 minutes just wandering around, grabbing bottles and cases an enjoying myself.  A few hundred dollars later, and Rob and I were loading up the trunk of my car.  The propriater also threw in a couple of Unibroue shirts for us.  Not a bad haul.  On Rob’s advice, I’d left some of the bigger brands (Unibroue and some of the Euros), as we could hit a Metro and get those there.  So off we drove, headed to a Metro for a few more beers and some water.  It was at Metro where I started to feel seriously ill.  But still, a trunk full of beer is not a bad way to end a great road-trip.

It was an awesome (long) day, and while I’ll probably plan on staying a bit longer then 7 hours on my next visit, it was totally worth the effort of getting there.  Thanks to Rob, for having the vision, and all the cool beer people along the way who helped make the day great.  If you haven’t gone to Montreal yet, plan on it.
