Rescousse Altbeir – Dieu du Ciel!

Ah, the joys of friends who both travel and like beer.  A while back, Matt Caldwell (onebeeratatime.wordpress.com) was in La Belle Province, and brought me back a lovely little stash of beers.  One of them was Rescousse Altbeir, by the legendary Dieu du Ciel! brewery in Montreal (okay, their main brewery is in St Jerome, but the brewpub is in the Plateau).  Basically, if you haven’t heard of Dieu du Ceil!, you’re probably new to this blog.  Far and away, one of the leading breweries in Canada right now.  I write about them frequently, a good starting place is here: http://www.torontobeerblog.com/tag/dieu-du-ciel/.  While you can’t get this beer at the LCBO, if you like the sound of the style, you might consider Beau’s Festivale, which is also an excellent Altbeir.

From a 341ml ISB with a beautiful DDC label and freshness date indicated on the side, the beer pours a slightly cloudy brown with hints of copper at the sides .  Small fluffy head drops to a decent ring and nice active film that leaves a bit of lacing.  Aroma is big sweet grains and a nice yeasty presence.  Akin to a baking loaf of rye bread.  Mmmmmmm, bready.  A little hint of caramel sweetness is followed by just a touch of mineral like hops, with something just a little fruity.  Taste is much less caramelly than the aroma, but a nice dry hop is much more forward on the tongue.  Grains are more complex too, definitely getting some wheat-like hints with the lovely bready malt.  Finish is quick and nicely dry, though there is a slight linger of the malts too.  A fairly complex beer, but one that you could easily quaff a fair number of.  The beer is not quite medium bodied on the palate, but with the nice dry hops, it drinks much lighter than it actually is.  I would love to see the good people at Keep6 bring this one into the LCBO (hint hint Tom).

Santé, Dieu du Ciel!

About the Brewery

Dieu du Ciel! logoDDC’s Via Dolorosa:

From the time it opened its brewpub on Laurier avenue in Montreal, Dieu du Ciel has been aiming to brew the best beers possible, without compromise, to bring you a unique, intense tasting experience. No matter the production costs, the demanding labor and the many difficulties that came with the production of beer, our first motivation is to always bring you original, satisfying beers. We love beer, and insist on showing it in the ones we brew.

We value the work of our employees and believe they should be remunerated accordingly, so that they can earn a comfortable living. Our respect of humankind and of the environment always guides our choices when we make decisions concerning the enterprise.

We scorn the latest trends and brew beers that seduce us primarily by their intrinsic qualities.

We want to always remain creative by constantly experimenting new recipes and creating new beers.

We have the ever present concern to improve ourselves, by continuing to learn from a vast choice of literature, by taking courses (classes), by traveling in our own country and abroad to taste other outstanding beers, by discussing beer making with respected brewers, by constantly working on our existing recipes, to keep making better beer always and by investing in our equipments, to make them more and more efficient and flexible.

At Dieu du Ciel, quality always comes first.

Amen!
