Hopfenweisse — Les Trois Mousquetaires

Following on the tail of Great Lakes Miami Weiss, is another one of these quirky over-hopped wheat beers.  This one from the excellent Quebecois brewer, Les Trois Mousquetaires.  Known for making some epic classic style beers, their Hopfenweisse showcases their ability to pave roads as well as pay homage.

Hopfenweisse — Les Troise Mousquetaires

From a 750ml bottle that would look equally at home in the wine section of the LCBO, Les Trois Mousquetaires Hopfenweisse pours a very hazy honey-orange hue.  A big 2″ white head very slowly drops but leaves decent lacing, not just on the glass, but on your upper lip too.  The aroma is immediately citrusy hops, particularly lemon peel, and clove and corainder from the wheat beer.  The taste is more citrus hops, showing bitter lemon and citrus peels.  There is Belgian candi sugar, ginger candies and more wheat spices.  Just a touch of alcohol heat toward the back of the palate adds another layer of interest.  The finish is a lingering spiciness with an astringent bitterness.  The mouth feel is on the light side of medium, but with a feeling like drinking softened water; there’s a density that somehow doesn’t weigh the beer down.  The medium carbonation surely helps keep it light and effervescent.  A beautiful beer, less brash than some others in it’s style, but still very complex and interesting.  Possibly a great bottle to offer a professed non-beer person.

Sante, Les Trois Mousquetaires!

Buy Hopfenweisse

There are still a limited number of bottles at the LCBO, #333468, which are worth the effort of chasing down, trust me.  I assume it also has distribution in Quebec.

Drink It With

A moderatley hot Thai red curry.  While it isn’t crazy over-hopped, it will compliment the heat nicely, and the ginger and spices will partner perfectly with the earthy and complex red curry paste.  The weight of the coconut sauce will be perfectly balanced with the bright effervescent beer.  Just trust me on this one.  I’ve been eating a cool block blue cheese from Monforte Dairy recently, but I have no recollection of the name.  I think it was a sheep’s milk cheese (but could be wrong).  It wasn’t epicly blue, but was nicely salty and complex, with some funk and a creaminess.  I didn’t actually try the two together, but I would bet it would be a mean pairing.

About The Brewery

So, I’m actually at a bit of a loss here.  Les Trois Mousquetaires is a microbrewery in Brossard, Quebec.  While I think I’m comfortable enough reading French to get most of their website, facebook page and twitter, I can’t really find a 411.  But the make hella good beers, and when you see one, you should buy it.  Also, a better French speaker/reader can correct me, if I’ve missed something tremendously obvious on their website: http://lestroismousquetaires.ca/
